Our craft makers mostly come from remote, often marginalised communities. We buy from over 400 producers throughout the country and when we have resources, we provide training, giving them opportunities to increase their incomes and improve the quality of their lives. Many women have become spokeswomen in their communities: some are managers, others are group representatives and all have gained confidence and a greater sense of control over their lives. |
The producers participate in setting prices for the products they make, and they manage quality control amongst themselves, formalised in training manuals developed with NGO partners. Grading systems ensure that quality work is rewarded. The producers receive training in basic money management and keep records of production and sales. We try and maintain transparent relationships with our producers and suppliers so subscribing to the ethos of Fair Trade. |
Our craft makers mostly utilise local resources in their products and their workspace is usually at home or under a shady tree nearby, with a peaceful and productive atmosphere. They value the resources they are working with, and prefer to remain in their home environment rather than move to a nearby town to look for work. Children are encouraged to learn from their parents when they are busy working, but they are not encouraged to miss school as education is highly respected and appreciated. |
