A small group of Ju/’hoan-speaking San women from the Kalahari region of Namibia, explore their rich tradition on fabric. Some depict geometric designs that are drawn from beadwork on traditional collecting bags and cloaks, with motifs that may have associated meanings – a circular shape with rays or spokes can variously represent the sun, the moon in different phases, or an owl’s eye, amongst other themes.
Some of these works interpret enigmatic ancient rock engravings found throughout Namibia, thought to represent the entoptic phenomena seen by a shaman when entering a state of trance.
